Co-op Midcounties is partnering with over a hundred local volunteering groups to offer a home-delivery service that will ensure the most vulnerable in the community receive essential food supplies throughout the Covid-19 outbreak.

The Society has been gathering details of vulnerable people living local to its Food stores for the past two weeks and has already identified a list of customers in need of help with shopping deliveries while in self-isolation.
It has now also proactively contacted more than 52,000 members who are known to be vulnerable and in self-isolation to offer its support, and is asking customers to continue to speak to teams in their local Co-op Food store if they know of people in the community that would benefit from the service.
Co-op Midcounties is putting customers in direct contact with local volunteering groups who, working with their partner Co-op Food store, will deliver shopping directly to the homes of these members while they remain in self-isolation. Where volunteering groups are unable to reach specific individuals, drop offs will be made via Co-op Food’s home delivery vans.
Through the new scheme, customers and members will be able to request the specific essential items they need and, wherever possible, volunteering groups will deliver these straight to their door.
Safe social distancing will be carried out across all deliveries, with shopping left on the doorstep.
Phil Ponsonby, Chief Executive of Co-op Midcounties, said: “Our colleagues across the Society have been working tirelessly to support our communities since the start of this outbreak and this is our next step in doing just that. Protecting those who are most vulnerable is key, which is why providing a service that means they can stay safe at home is so important.
“We have already made more than ten thousand deliveries to people across our communities and, in the coming days and weeks, we’ll be looking to extend this service as far and wide as we are able to. We’re continuing to look for volunteers and volunteer groups to help us to do this and I’d ask anyone that thinks they can help to get in touch".

“I’d again like to send my biggest thank you to colleagues throughout the Society, from those in our stores on the front line, to the people working around the clock behind the scenes to make services like this a possibility. A second and huge thank you has to go to all of the amazing volunteering groups that have partnered with us on the home-delivery scheme – we literally couldn’t do it without you.”
Co-op Midcounties Food stores will continue to run a priority shopping hour from 9.30 – 10.30 Monday to Friday for carers of the elderly and vulnerable, as well as NHS workers.
