Ben Reid was invited to attend the official launch of the IYC at the UN Building, New York on 31st October 2011
The United Nations General Assembly declared 2012 as the International Year of Cooperatives, highlighting the contribution of cooperatives to socio-economic development, particularly their impact on poverty reduction, employment generation and social integration.
With the theme of “Cooperative Enterprises Build a Better World”, the Year seeks to encourage the growth and establishment of cooperatives all over the world. It also encourages individuals, communities and governments to recognize the agency of cooperatives in helping to achieve internationally agreed upon development goals, such as the Millennium Development Goals
Ben, along with other key players in the UK movement were invited to attend as delegates to the official launch of the IYC at the UN General Assembly, 31st October, 2011, New York.
Dame Pauline Green addressed the Assembly highlighting the importance of the co-operative model of business, asking that they be given equal promotion with the stock holder model, that the specific and unique legal and financial framework of a cooperative is fully acknowledged and recognised in public policy and regulation.
