Shrewsbury charity helps local people find employment with grant

A Shrewsbury charity is able to continue helping local people in need to find employment, with the support of a £250 grant from The Midcounties Co-operative.
Barnabas Community Projects was established in 2014 to support disadvantaged people in Shrewsbury. Last year it launched its 360 Journey to Work programme, a ten week course that offers one-to-one mentoring for those struggling to find work due to past addiction or homelessness.
The courses proved popular but the charity needs funding to continue offering them. It recently received a £250 grant from The Midcounties Co-operative, which will enable it to continue the sessions and reach out to more people in the community.
The grant was issued following a successful application to The Midcounties Co-operative’s community fund, which provides funding to worthy recipients throughout its trading areas.
Karen Williams, project leader of Barnabas Community Projects, said: “Our 360 Journey to Work programme has been really successful this year and has resulted in over 60% of our service users finding work. However, as a charity, we rely on donations to help us continue organising the sessions.
“The grant from The Midcounties Co-operative will really help us to continue supporting local people in need by building their self-confidence and employability with our weekly drop-ins.”
The provision of grants is a key part of the Society’s ‘Regional Communities’ strategy, which sees members and colleagues come together to provide impactful and sustainable support for local community groups through volunteering and fundraising initiatives.
The Midcounties Co-operative in Shrewsbury has a longstanding relationship with Barnabas Community Project, having supported its food bank project earlier this year by raising awareness of food poverty and collecting donations at local primary schools.
Alison Holmes, leadership team ambassador at The Midcounties Co-operative in Shrewsbury, said: “Our grants scheme is our way of supporting organisations that make a valuable contribution to the Shrewsbury community.
“The 360 Journey to Work programme has been a valuable resource in supporting people in our community who need a little extra help with employment. We’re looking forward to working with Barnabas Community Projects again and helping them continue their good work.”
