National Minimum Wage
The Midcounties Coop is committed to paying colleagues at the level of the National Living Wage.
Along with many other large employers, we have recently undertaken a payroll review and discovered that, unintentionally, various salary sacrifice, salary exchange or other policies and schemes have meant that some colleagues will not have been paid at the correct level.
We can confirm that we are updating our processes to ensure that this situation will not be compounded or happen again.
We do however, need to make payments to both former and current colleagues. We will pay those current colleagues we owe money to in a separate pay run in March 2019. The money will be paid into the same bank account we pay their wages.
For former colleagues we have divided these into two groups; those who we owe less than £5 net, and those who we owe £5 net or more.
We will write to former colleagues where we owe £5 and above at the last known address we have for them. They will then be asked to contact us and confirm their identity. Once we have established this, we will be able to pay any monies into the same account we paid salary. We will also write and confirm the breakdown of the payment, providing details to satisfy HMRC requirements.
As the process of collating, printing, administering and posting letters is both costly and un-environmentally friendly, for those former colleagues that we owe between 1p and £4.99 we will pay the money to Step Change, a debt charity; www.stepchange.co.uk. If you believe that you might be in this group and would like us to pay the money to you, then please contact us using the details below.
We will retain the money until 31st March 2019 in case we do receive any calls. Thereafter it will be paid to Step Change and it will no longer be claimable.
For the avoidance of doubt, not all colleagues are owed money and if the sum is greater than £5 we will contact them at the last known address.
We will continue to make reasonable endeavours to pay this money to those we owe, but where we are unable to make contact any monies will be paid to Step Change.
