An Easter Message From Our CEO
Published 10 Apr 2020 in Society Announcements
This Easter will be unlike any other that any of us have experienced, but the one thing that will be the same is the commitment all of us at your Society have to ensure we support each other, whether as colleagues, as fellow members, as customers or as part of the communities in which we trade.
There will be changes as in previous years to our opening hours over the Easter period. Most of our Food stores will remain open as normal, although some will have reduced opening times & our larger Food stores will be closed on Easter Sunday to comply with legislation. Our pharmacies will also be open at set times on Good Friday and Easter Monday.

We continue to review on a daily basis the measures we are taking for the safety of both our front-line colleagues as well as our customers. We have now installed protective screens across our counter points in all our outlets. We have also increased the contactless limit from £30 to £45 and would encourage you to use card and contactless wherever possible. I would again ask for your help in complying with the requests that we make, particularly in ensuring appropriate social distance whilst in any of our outlets.
I have been encouraged by the response we have had to our Childcare NHS heroes fund that launched this week. The fund is aimed at assisting our brilliant essential workers whose children continue to attend our nurseries through contributions towards their nursery fees. We have paused fees for all children not currently attending our nurseries as a result of the pandemic, and are asking parents to support this fund instead through making their own contributions where they can. The fund now stands at over £30,000. Many of you have asked how you could contribute, and I’ll update you on that next week.
Our food bank fund has been similarly successful, and thank you to all those who have made a donation so far. We launched the Food Bank Fund with an initial contribution from the Society of £25,000. Its aim is to enable our 40 local food bank partners to apply for a grant and ensure that they can continue to serve those in need. Further information can be found here.
I’ve mentioned in previous updates how proud I am that we have been able to help vulnerable housebound citizens with their shopping. We set up a new service to do this, using volunteers to help, and I’m delighted that at the time of writing we have now completed 6,000 deliveries. That’s a huge community response which has helped so many. Thank you to all involved in this, in whatever way.
The feedback I receive about so many of our colleagues from so many in our communities is amazing, and I want to again pay tribute to all of them for the work they continue to do. I hope you will agree that the action we have and will continue to take is very much in keeping with our co-operative values and fully demonstrates our commitment to you, our colleagues and our communities.
I wish you and your loved ones a happy Easter, hope that you stay safe and thank you for your continued support.
