Meet Jennifer Simpson from Dorset

Our competition for the Ethical Adventure of a Lifetime was won by Jennifer Simpson from Dorset – and she can’t wait to see where her coffee was grown
On being informed that she’d won our competition for the Ethical Adventure of a Lifetime to visit Guatemala, Belize and Mexico, Jennifer Simpson, who’s known as Jennie, at first couldn’t believe it.
She says, ‘If I’m honest, I thought it was too good to be true. I never win fantastic competitions like that.’ When she finally realised she really had won, she was delighted.
Jennie is a library manager and has two daughters and four grandchildren. She is a customer of Co-op Energy and is strongly committed to Co-operative values. Together with her partner, John, a Co-op consultant, she helped to set up a credit union in her home town, Christchurch, Dorset, and championed it as a Fairtrade town.
‘We always buy Fairtrade, so I’m looking forward to finding out about the difference it makes to poor farmers and producers,’ she says. Jennie’s great adventure began at our Leckhampton Food Store, in the south Cheltenham area, where she bought a 227g bag of Co-op Irresistible Single Origin Guatemalan Fairtrade Roast & Ground Coffee, along with a 200g jar of Co-op Fairtrade Gold Roast Instant Coffee.
In January, together with John, she will be travelling all the way to Guatemala to find out where the coffee originated from.
This will include a visit to the coffee processing plant and the plantation where the beans were picked, with a chance to see the difference that Fairtrade makes. After this she will go on a 12-day Mayan encounter, courtesy of our travel partner G Adventures.
Jennie has never been to central America – apart from one family holiday in Mexico – so she’s really looking forward to finding out more about the region. ‘I know it’s not a holiday and that it will be a real eye-opener,’ she adds.
Pictures of Jennie’s adventure will appear in the Summer 2019 magazine.
